Castello di Ama 2025
Danilo Currò stayed at Castello di Ama at the end of spring.
Through his eyes, the places of Ama have become places of light, a light seen as a creative force and as the ultimate subject, at the opposite poles of photographing. Each piece of architecture is rendered in its permeability as a space that, at the same time, welcomes and reveals a mystery. The observer is then left on the threshold between the dreamed and the lived, in that small distance in which the image takes shape. In Danilo Currò’s photographs, Castello di Ama appears under an unusual and estranging light. The image is not a place of presentation, but of revelation. And it is light that guides this transformation.
A discovery that involves not only the result but also the process. In the series, many photographs were taken at night, walking and observing spaces that, through light or its absence, become unfamiliar. Danilo Currò’s images are not descriptive; they do not intend to offer an account of Castello di Ama, but rather to evoke a condition of the place that Currò himself describes as follows:
“In those days I understood that I was opening a threshold. Light became a passage towards a parallel, magical, evanescent reality. A world that seems to have always existed, just hidden, and that perhaps I could only sense by changing the way I looked.” Castello di Ama, in Danilo Currò’s photographs, is light and epiphany.
His research has interpreted Ama as a place of waiting and revelation, but also as a space where reality is suspended. Every environment, like every photographic image, has taken the shape of the light that passes through it. Thus light is not merely an aesthetic or symbolic motif, but a founding trait. During the residency Danilo Currò pursued something that tends towards the invisible.
Castello di Ama was explored through a gaze sensitive to variations of light, to the dark atmospheres of the cellars, to the shadows of the village, to the glimmers of nature.
A complex panorama, made of multiple times and simultaneous visions, from distant tradition to timeless works.
The images, evanescent and enigmatic in character, let a surreal and magical backdrop surface within the productive worldliness of Castello di Ama.
